Károly Schmal Works Highlights

Károly Schmal (1942)

Visual artist, graphic artist. In spite of studying painting at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts, Károly Schmal is mainly known for his graphic work. In addition to his applied works (posters, catalogues) he also made graphic and then photo-based artworks. In the sixties and seventies he combined photographic and conceptual thinking in his art, primarily through exploring the contrast of light and shadow. Through building his graphics, paintings, and photoworks based on geometric axes and sometimes diagonals, Schmal examines reflection, and the relationship between part and whole. In the eighties he continued to make paper-based works featuring folding and creasing. The color scheme of his work is also characterized by the shades of gray, which reflects his way of thinking derived from graphic works.
