Károly Escher (1890-1966)
Photographer. Had a career in film in his early years and worked as a cameraman in newsreels and feature films. Although he had had an interest in it since his childhood, Escher turned towards photography only at the end of the 1920s. It was Rudolf Balogh and Ernő Mihályfi who invited him to join Est Lapok [Evening News] as a photojournalist in 1928, he had a significant role in making Pesti Napló Képes Melléklete [Illustrated Attachment of Pest Diary] a highly esteemed magazine of the 1930s. His photographs captured a vast array of subjects, as he took photographs in theatres, political and sport events, dances and parks. He portrayed the public figures and artists of the time as well as the life of those living on the margins of society. Escher was persistent in creating genuine and natural imagery. He was among the firsts to photograph without flash with a small-format camera and used motion blur intentionally in his report and sports photographs.
