Kata Sugár Works Highlights

Kata Sugár (1910-1943)

Photographer. One of the distinctive figures of Hungarian social documentary photography, her striking images depict the life and poverty of workers and peasants. Following her studies at Alice Madzsar’s school of movement art she married the painter Andor Sugár. It was through him that Sugár came into contact with the left-wing movement and the Szocialista Képzőművészek Csoportja [Group of Socialist Fine Artists]. She took on photography in 1934 and studied at the studio of Marian Reismann where she became friends with Klára Langer. The majority of her works perished, those that remained were first exhibited in 1960.
