András Baranyay (1938-2016)
Visual artist. András Baranyay was interested in the connection between photography and visual arts, and is known for his particular self-portraits. In 1969, he participates in the second IPARTERV exhibition, then in 1976, he takes part in Expozíció. Fotó/művészet (Exposition. Photo/Art, Hatvany Lajos Museum, Hatvan). Initially he was captivated by different graphic techniques and litography, then in the 70’s photography became the most important medium in his practice. At first, he photographed fragments of hands, later self-portraits and still lifes. In his photo-based works he applied the approach derived from fine art, his photographs are chemically manipulated and colored. By reinterpreting photography in a picturesque way, Baranyay has developed an individual style that has made him one of the most important neo-avantgarde artist of the 1960s and 1970s.
