Gizella Rákóczy (1947-2015)
Visual artist. Rákóczy studied painting at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts and then worked as an artist in Miklós Erdély’s mosaic workshop (MURUS). As of 1976, she began building her systematic-variational images – based on a single initial form and composed of geometric motifs – according to certain mathematical regularities. Through the techniques of doubling, multiplying and mirroring, she created endless series. Having initially worked with tempera and silkscreen printing, after 1998, she developed a painting method that resulted in the translucent shine of aquarelle layers. Her artworks – much like mathematical sequences – display seemingly random but regular patterns, which lend these works their intellectual and aesthetic effect.
