Ernő Berda (1914-1961)

Painter, graphic artist. In 1928 he begins to study photography in Pozsony. He makes his photograms there, and draws the attention of László Moholy-Nagy, who is teaching at the local department of the Bauhaus at that time. In 1933 Berda becomes a founding member of the Szocialista Képzőművészek Csoportja [Group of Socialist Fine Artists]. In the same year he is awarded by the Szinyei Társaság [Szinyei Society], then in 1939 he makes a series of lino-cuts about the Spanish Civil War entitled NO PASARAN! His solo exhibition is held in 1955 at Fényes Adolf Terem [Adolf Fényes Hall], later his worsening illness prevents him from working. The Hungarian National Gallery presents his retrospective exhibition in 1971.
