György Lőrinczy (1935-1981)
Photographer, theoretical writer. One of the defining figures of Hungarian photography from the ’60s. In his series entitled, Ragacsok (Stickiness, which is also referred to in the literature as Szubsztanciák – Substances), he emphasises the physical qualities of the portrayed things, his photos pressing the limits of abstract visualisation. His writings are published in the periodicals Fényképművészeti Tájékoztató [Photo Art Prospectus] and Fotóművészet [Photo Art]. His book, New York, New York is published in 1972. From 1974, he lives in New York, where he works as the photo editor of Art-Rite magazine. In New York, he begins to paint over with acrylic paint the photos that he has made with homemade emulsion on deckled paper, and which he shows at his Wooster Street studio in 1981, as organised by Edit de Ak.
